Congratulations to the Rotary Club of East London - the first club in District 9320 to have been granted their 2002/2003 Presidential Citation. And thanks to their secretary, Fiona Schwulst, for submitting the following details.

THE FULFILMENTS OF

THE ROTARY CLUB OF EAST LONDON

FOR THEIR PRESIDENTIAL CITATION

1.       COMMUNITY SERVICE ACHIEVEMENTS:

bulletThe monthly transporting Senior Citizens of two clubs for a fellowship meeting, involving all members of the R.C.E.L.
bulletSenior Citizens Christmas Party.
bulletA Beach Walk followed by a breakfast involving 150 people including 15 under-privileged children.
bulletRunning the bar for the SACOB Conference.
bulletTwo R.C.E.L. members volunteered to serve on the Board of E.L.T.B.A.
bulletThe introduction of the Sustainable Employment Programme at Sinebhongo.
bulletThe accumulation of funds for the Health Centre for Sinebhongo.         
bulletDonation of a stove and funds for a fridge and music equipment for the Parkside Pre-Primary School.  Organisation of a donation for flooring from Marley Flooring.
bulletOrdering of two wheel chairs through Rotary.
bulletDonation of R300-00 to sponsor 3 pages of the booklet, “Wheeling around East London.”
bulletSale of tickets for the “Blind Dog Association.”
bulletA fund raising piano-recital and musical evening by the previous outgoing exchange student, which made R3344-00.
bulletDonations from trusts:
bulletR800-00 to the Personal Empowerment Programme to combat Aids/HIV.
bulletR1 500-00 to assist a boy suffering from   a urological defect.
bulletR50 000-00 earmarked for children’s homes and old age homes.
bulletA fundraiser Golf Day is scheduled for the 7th June.
bulletWorking on a matching grant for a new NSIR Boat, which will be called the Spirit of Rotary.

 

2.       INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEE:

bulletNaomi Goodley, the previous G.S.E. student addressed the Kimberly Conference.
bulletProposal of a candidate for G.S.E. who made the selection to the final stage but was unfortunately not selected.
bulletFacilitation of incoming and outgoing short term exchange students
bulletIn the process of recruiting a long-term exchange student.
bulletParticipation in two stalls at the Harbour Festival scheduled for end of March to raise funds.
bulletA comedy supper show is scheduled for May.
bulletEntertainment at a fellowship evening of a member from the Rotary Club of Lilongwe. Twinning with this club. Hosting about 10 couple from this club over the Easter Weekend.

 

3.       VOCATIONAL SERVICES COMMITTEE:

bulletPresentation of two Vocational Services Awards
bulletThe organization of a Camping Weekend at Mbotyi on the Transkei Wild Coast.
bulletA fundraising musical evening on the 11th and 12th April. This will be a tribute to Cliff Richard and the Shadows.
bulletThe facilitation of a Shadow Work Scheme where 50 students were placed in various organizations, involving co-operation from the members in their professional and business capacities

 

4.       YOUTH COMMITTEE:

bulletDeep involvement with four interact clubs where each member in the four of the members of the committee have taken one of the clubs under their wing.
bulletPreparation for the starting of an Earlyact club is underway at the A.W.Barnes Primary School.
bulletHudson ark High School won the award as the best Interact School at the
bulletInteract Conference and won the bid to host this conference in 2004. The Youth Committee has pledged assistance.
bulletTwo successful fund raising functions called “A Taste of India” raised in excess of R10 000-00. 45 women attended a Mehndi Art Workshop, the demonstration of the dressing of Saris and the herbs and spices used in Indian Cuisine, at the Vincent Library and 200 people attended a Indian Banquet where a typical wedding meal was enjoyed while being entertained by traditional dancers and a fashion show of traditional dress and contemporary wear in a hall decorated with an Indian theme.
bulletA fellowship breakfast at the home of a member.
bulletSelling of Boerewors Rolls to raise money for the refurbishing of a donated Yacht.
bulletThe collection of 1c and 2c coins for Polio Plus.
bulletThe initiating of a Breakfast or a Dinner where Nelson Mandela has been asked to address the guests. This has received approval from the Mayors Office and is at present en route to  the Office of the Premier.
bullet40 under-privileged children will be taken to Hobbiton On Hogsback on the weekend of the 2nd and the 3rd of May. This is a joint project with Beacon Bay Rotary Club.
bulletSending of a representative from three of the Interact Schools to RYLA.
bulletSending two children from each of our Interact Schools to the Interact Conference held in Graaff-Reinet.
bulletSending of a deserving child from John Bisseker to the Science fest in Grahamstown.
bulletFinancing the repairs needed for the yacht donated for Youth Development. A sail with the Rotary Badge has been made.

 

5.       CLUB SERVICE COMMITTEE

bulletAdministration for the District Conference for 2003/2004.
bulletFundraising through the weekly whiskey drawer, making about R4300-00 for the year.
bulletFundraising through the administering of the 100 club, making about R5100-00
bulletMoney from the collection boxes: R2200-00 being distributed for the publication of guide for wheelchair users and for use in shelter for abused women and children.
