THE ROTARY COMMEMORATIVE TREESPORT ELIZABETH(Prepared by PP Tom Mullins, Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth – March 1999 – Revised February 2003) Since the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth (the third Rotary Club to be established in South Africa, and the first in the Eastern Cape) was established by charter dated 25 April 1925, six trees have been planted in public places in Port Elizabeth to commemorate significant Rotary occasions. PP Tom Mullins prepared a brief resume of those occasions gleaned from presently available sources, indicating the location of each tree, the type of tree planted, its present condition (March 1999), and the inscription on the memorial plaque in each case. The approximate position of each of the four trees planted in St George’s Park is indicated on an attached diagram. The paths on the diagram, although it emanated from the municipality, are not entirely accurate, but the position of the trees as shown thereon will enable them to be found with ease. The trees planted in St George’s Park are detailed in order of date of planting. PP Tom's resume is designed as a brochure, and can be downloaded as a 106Kb pdf file. |
