Reduce Child Mortality

Prevent Deaths from Dehydration
1.8 million children die globally every year as a result of dehydration caused by diarrhoea. Luckily for this little girl she won’t be one of them, because her mother now has a simple, affordable and permanent solution to the problem of rehydration.

The future of children like her is in your hands.

How does it work?

The spoons with the accompanying instructions could dramatically reduce a major cause of child deaths due to dehydration; and this at a really affordable rate.

The Solution. In most cases the solution is to rehydrate the children by giving them an oral rehydrating fluid with a home based solution (previously known as Darrow’s fluid) – a mixture of sugar and salt in boiled water. Its use has been promoted by clinics for many years.

Why the Spoon of Hope? The current instructions issued by clinics are 8 teaspoons of sugar plus ½ teaspoon of salt in 1 litre of boiled water.  This method is confusing and difficult to prepare and requires a certain level of literacy and numeracy skills.

The advantage of the Spoon of Hope is its absolute simplicity.

How can we help?

  1. Donate funds directly to the Spoons Project to be used to run a measurable pilot project to provide 'proof' the spoons work, and thus access funding from first world countries. We will also then be able to distribute spoons through clinics and NGOs.

  2. Order some spoons for your own distribution to NGOs etc. We will deliver them locally (via the Post Office) at a cost of R2.00 per spoon; so R1 000.00 will get 500 spoons delivered to your club.

  3. Send information out to any overseas Rotary clubs, service clubs, churches or organisations that you may have contact with. We believe that overseas clubs would be able to assist generously with the capital and would be happy to have the spoons sent to a deserving cause in our 3rd world country.

Participating Rotary clubs qualify for the RI Presidential citation of “Reducing Child Mortality”.
